I groan and clutch my stomach with one hand and with the other I push the last plate Sam brought out back toward the center of the table. “I can’t eat another bite. But it was so good.” I feel sleepy-eyed the way only a good meal can make someone feel. I got a little tipsy and giggly after the drink Sam brought out, which Edward thought was adorable. I declined a second one because I really wanted to enjoy every second of tonight.

Sam struts up to the table. He delivered every dish himself and waited around for us to take a taste before he walked away.

“Has he ever made bad food?” I ask Edward. I know that Sam can hear me, which makes me bite back a grin.

Edward opens his mouth to answer, but Sam shoves his shoulder. “Watch it, kid,” he says. “Ingrates don’t get free meals.”

Edward grins. “There was this one time when he made veal something. It came out chewy and gristly.”

Sam’s face hardens. “That was the meat.”

“And then there was another time when his cakes all fell.”

“Old baking soda,” he gripes.

“And then once he made the most god-awful cupcakes.”

“They changed your life.”

“They made me into someone new.” He fidgets with his fork. “I don’t know who I would be without them.”

“I’m not nearly as close to them as you are, but I feel the same way,” I admit. I was standing on a street corner when I met Emily and Logan, and I’ve never stood on one since that day. “They made my life possible. I don’t even know how to explain it.”

“You don’t have to explain it. Some things don’t require explanations.”

A waitress bustles around the corner and slips a folded piece of paper into Edward’s hand. He opens it. “That fucker,” he breathes. The waitress laughs and walks away.

He lays the note on the table. “May I?” I ask.

“Of course.” He motions for me to go ahead as he reaches into his back pocket and pulls out his wallet. I reach for my purse at the same time.

“Let me pay for half,” I say.

He lays the tips of his fingers on the note and pushes it in my direction. “Read the note.”

The note says: Fuck you very much. Amount due - Zero. Tip your wait staff.

Edward takes out some bills and tosses them onto the table. “Can I help with that, at least?” I ask.

He shakes his head and places his hand at the small of my back to lead me from the room. But as we turn the
